Poem for Kathy

greenspotsYour death was cruel
unfair, wrong, a dagger to my heart

We couldn’t bring ourselves to say goodbye
and so we never did

I know you were scared my love
and all I could do was be there for you and watch
as cancer took your body and your incredible life from you
step by bitter step

Even on that dark descent we found some good times –
our son’s wedding,
second christmas with the grandchildren –
but just a shadow of the amazing things we did before

There is a huge memorial being erected for you my darling
it’s right here inside me
the memories of our amazing life together
cancer can’t take those
